Mauch Chunk, PA >

Mauch
Chunk (pronounced Mauk Chunk) in Pennsylvania is now known as Jim Thorpe. Jim Thorpe is a stunning historical
town deep in the valley of the Lehigh
River
and still retains many of
its historical buildings. In the 1900s it was the second favourite
tourist centre in the USA after Niagara Falls and was known as the Switzerland of America
- it is still well worth a visit - see the tourist links in
Books & Links.
The pages here contain building drawings and photos, plans
and information about the the Lehigh waterfront area of old Mauch Chunk, PA, - adjacent to
the CNJ railroad station. There are details of books and local Jim Thorpe
organisations (in
Books & Links). Go to the Photos page (above) for archive and
recent photos of the old Mauch Chunk riverside.
For a brief history
of the town, go to the websites of the
Mauch Chunk Historical Society, the Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce or, for a railroad focus,
to the Mauch Chunk page of the Black Diamonds to Tidewater website.
The pages under the Railroad
(above) contain information about the CNJ
operations in Mauch Chunk in the 1940s and early 1950s - operations, signalling, what locomotives were seen there and other miscellaneous details. These pages are still in a fairly
early stage of development. For other information about the locomotives that the CNJ ran, go to
the CNJ pages.
